depends on how much room you have to exercise it and how much time you have to spend with it. Remember, you have to show strong dominance and earn their respect. After establishing alpha dog they are great, loyal, loving pets. Don't treat them bad to make them mean! They will naturally guard you out of love and respect and be safer pets around children, etc.

This breed can be an extremely fun breed if you know what you are doing. They have endless amounts of energy and have excercise needs greater than many of the hunting breeds. They are an incredibly smart breed and will drive you nuts if you are not fully prepared for the needs of this dog. Check with your local rescues and humane societies for a lovely Pit Bull that has already gone through the rigors of temperment testing. Many in shelters are already well trained dogs and have been raised in a family environment. I would not get one from a breeder unless they are active in the UKC (united kennel club...AKC only recognizes the Am. Staffordshire...which is a breed that stems from a Pit) and the APBA (american pit bull association). This will help insure that you will get a dog from people who understand genetics and temperment. If you are ready for the commitment of a high energy breed than a Pit Bull may be the dog for you.

If that is what you like then get it...but know that there are risks involved. Make sure that you treat that dog with love and respect..the worse they are treated the worse they will act...i have a friend that has one and they have three kids that ride it and that dog never turned on them...just make sure that if you have no kids now (if you are old enough) then don't plan on having them while you have the dog because they should be raised around kids or other animals since you get it for safety...i hear more of rot attacks than pit bulls but i am not saying that they don't happen...All I can say though is if you want one don't let anything stop you but be careful and make sure that it is legal in your city or town before getting one

Hell yeh get a pit bull! I just got a pit puppy myself, dont listen to these idiots on here, they are all prejudice toward pits. My pup is around 3 months, and is the best dog ive ever had. Hes way better than my wifes 10 month old beagle, and thats not just a matter of opinion. Pits are wonderful dogs, and the only reason theres so much beef about them, is because they are big gnarly dogs, and sometimes ppl use them wrongly. But dont be hatin on some pits just cause of ppl, they make great lovable pets... TRUST ME!!

not if you have to ask that question.
Any true Pit lover knows that they don't need to ask opinions about it. It is for the love of the breed we do it.

and Claire P. needs to take her own advise and take the little quiz that the AKC offers to know that the American Pitbull terrier is one of the most recommended dogs to have with children.
And the Stafford bull terrier or any bull terrier breed period all come from the same line just selectively breed for other body types.

If you must get one, at least go to a shelter and give a chance to one of the thousands of pit bulls dropped off because the owners or owners children couldn't handle them. Do not buy one from a breeder, there are too many in need of homes already.

Depends on alot of things, but if you want a pitbull, please, please take all the extra precausions to ensure that you, your children and other animals and people are safe.

I have a bit of history with pit bulls, not of them hurting me, but the nature of the attacks I saw were very disturbing to me, and I have never seen such things with a dog of another breed.

Two seperate incidents, two different dogs, both "family pets", with no history of abuse, both pit bulls.

In my opinion, it's not that they have the tendancy to be aggressive, but the fact that in the cases I saw- the dogs had no provocation, and gave no warning signs.

I love dogs dearly, and I don't hate pit bulls, they were bred to do a job, and they do it well, but they are definately a breed that can not be trusted to do be reasonable in all circumstances, and based on everything that has been said about pit bulls, I would never put them around children without a muzzle. Some might say "aww, that's a bit harsh", but I say "better safe than sorry".

You know, staffordshire bull terriers look similar to pit bulls, and are commonly thought of as that breed, but are actually a fantastic, family orientated, fun loving breed. If you don't want the agression, I would say they are great. They do guard, and are very brave, and sooo loyal to the little ones.

if you go to www.akc.org , they will tell you a bit about the temperments of the breeds, as well as what to look for physically in a pure bred dog. I found it very helpful in deciding what dog was best for me. There's also another website- www.petnet.com.au- you can do a questionare where they help you to find the right breed for you and your circumstances.

Good Luck :) Hope it all works out for you.

No. They're too inbred for fighting and will never be trustworthy around people and other animals. If you need a dog for protection get a Rottweiler, Doberman or a German Shepherd and go to a good trainer who uses behaviorial training not punishment based. A Pit Bull will be a liability in a lot of ways.

YES! YES! YES! I have 2 and they are awesome! As long as you don't plan on mistreating it! Read up on them first, just so you know what you're getting yourself into. If you live in a tiny apartment or a small space, maybe not such a good idea, they need exercise, but they're the best dogs in the world! But trust me... do your research first, I did, and I'm the happiest dog owner in the world... seriously I would bring them to work with me if my boss allowed it. Pits are the best!

sure, why not? but there is a stigma that goes along with pit bulls and people may worry about being close to you or having their children around etc.
