I think ecru is more of an oatmeal color and ivory is an off white that seems to have a yellower undertone. Oatmeal seems like it has more of a brown tone.

Ercu is RGB-Hex #FFF7E7
Ivory is RGB-Hex #FFFFF0

Basically, the Ivory is a white with a subtle yellow tint, and the Ercu is a white with a subtle pink tint. Most people can't tell the difference until a contrasting color is placed next to it. For example, putting a blue with the ivory will highlight the yellow as they're opposites on the color wheel. Even then, it'll take a keen eye to know what's happening.

ECRU is the french word for RAW, and it originally refered to the colour of raw cotton thread before it was dyed any other colour... and from the same base, the colour of cloth woven from undyed thread. It is a very light, pale beige colour.

IVORY is the colour of elephants tusks, a rich, creamy off-white.

in my floss inventory, it appears that ecru has more brown in it where as ivory is more yellow.
