my goddaughter has tried out for a recreational soccer league and she found out that she got a coach that is not very good. The coach doesn't know soccer very well and in the past she has gotten in trouble with the referees. my goddson had her and he said she wasn't very good and they lost all the games. I don't know what to say to her. I was thinking maybe for her to go to the practice and see the players and decide or to maybe ask the league for a switch. I just don't want her to lose her confidence she is a good player and I would hate for her to be unhappy. any suggestions would be appreciated.

You have a good suggestion and thought. Although why not you go to a game or two. Learn about the team problem for yourself. I understand that their are coaches that give of their time to help teach or coach these teams in the recreational leagues. It is a tough position. Yes, maybe the coach doesn't know the game very well or even how to teach the correct techniques to these kids. But it maybe a hard situation to have the team members ask the league to switch if the season has started.

For now all you can do is to encourage your goddaughter to keep playing and play as best as she feels she can. This league is a great learning and educational tool to growing up and it is each individual who makes up the whole team. It would be a good idea if you could see a few games, if at all possible, then see if this coach is teaching teamwork, working hard for the teams glory, and trying to win for the betterment of the kids she is coaching. Then if you feel that your daughter is right in her feelings, go talk to the coach and see if you can help her out.

Then use the switch as the last resort.

If your goddaughter doesn't feel she can play on a team with that coach, she should definitely ask the league to transfer her to another team. Being on a team with a coach/team mates that you don't get along with or don't like won't make for a good soccer year. Especially if your goddaughter wants to learn soccer and she doesn't have confidence in the coach she should switch teams. The league should most likely honour her request (especially as it is a recreational team).

I've been in her exact same situation many times. A few times I stuck with the team and other times I switched out. Either way I had positive and negative experiences.

If it makes her feel more comfortable to be on another team though, she should transfer.

And, personally, I wouldn't want my child on a team where the coach is a known offender with the referees and in a position to 'mentor' my child.

Gather the support of other parents. If you have to be the one to start the process .... do so.
First call a meeting of parents, and referees and team leaders have an open discussion to find out if other parents have been dissatisfied with this coach. Then as a united group call another meeting and present the coach with your collected issues of complaint. You may discover she is aware she needs further training and you as a group may be able to support her in this, She may resign or dig in and then you will need to take your collective complaints to a higher authority, liike the team managers or league or whatever is appropriate.

Go to practice and see if you can pick up any "dirt" on the coach that would get him fired, or if he's doing an okay job. If you can, try switching her soccer teams (hopefully it's not too late), and make sure she knows it's not always her fault.

Remember, not one player can win or loose a game.

Is there another league in the area or at the school with a coach that knows the game and makes their players comfortable?
