First, on a cutting board slice the top and bottom of the tomato off. Then slice a few times depending upon the thickness you want. Be careful not to hurt yourself!

WITH A KNIFE.
to stop the tomato from rolling, cut a little piece off the side where you aren't directly slicing from...it makes a small flat surface so the tomato stays balanced and easy to slice.

Hold the tomato with one hand. With the other, hold a very sharp knife (the sharpest you have) with the point down to the cutting board so it's at about a 45 degree angle. Pull the knife toward you through the tomato. Do not saw at the tomato from the top or side. Just one simple gliding motion pulling through it.

Always use a serated knife, it makes all the difference. Hold it sideways, and cut nice thick slices. When you get close to the end, lay it flat and cut from the side.

get a firm, fresh tomato and use a razor sharp knife. any other way, you'll squash the tomato or cut yourself.
you can stick toothpicks through the tomato for support, if it's not really firm.
