Old method is to put a light over a pan of soap and water. Flees are atracted to light and will drop into water and die. That is one reason they are attracted to white socks. Good Luck

I would be inclined to agree with clj. There's really no way to get out shelling out some money for this. If you're looking to kill the fleas IN your home, try some carpet powder. If it's real bad, an exterminator will have to be called in. Remember that if your cat has a lot of fleas, they will infest your room....therefore, even if you rid your cat of the fleas, they will simply be reinfested by fleas from the carpet, furniture, bedding, etc. Actually, a couple in the apartment complex we just left had fleas so bad that it infested the entire building. They spread like wildfire, so get it under control fast.
I've heard good things about the drops. You can get them at Wal-Mart. You just put a drop on the cat's back. It's supposed to work much better than flea collars, which, in my opinion, don't work that well at all.
Giving your cat a bath is another option. Unless it's a holy terror around water. Our male hates getting wet, but isn't destructive or ferocious when we give him a bath (he's such a gentleman with the claws). Just make sure you get a shampoo formulated to kill fleas and their eggs. There are powders, too, but those are also pretty tough to apply. My husband's parents used to put the cat's whole body (minus the head) into a pillowcase full of flea powder, close it tightly (but not so tight as to strangle the poor cat), and fluff the bottom of the pillowcase to distribute the powder.

I agree that a good dish soap will kill fleas: Having lived in a rural area, I learned that a solution of dish soap and water will strip the oils off of biting pests and drown them Just make sure to rinse your pet well too!
After your kitty has been washed, treat the whole house. Arm and Hammer puts out a powder that is great for killing fleas and flea eggs. Or you can use borax or powdered laundry detergent. Sprinkle it on your carpet and furniture and let it sit about 20 minutes or so, then vacuum. And continue vacuuming every day for at least 2 weeks in case you missed any fleas or eggs the first time.
That should get rid of the fleas. To get rid of them in the yard (where they may be hiding), take a look at treatments. Or there are a number of aromatic herbs that fleas don't like, if you want to try gardenning.
Good luck!

You got to be kidding. First off pets will cost you money if you care for them properly. If you're not going to care for the animal properly you shouldn't have it. OTC flea and wormers can kill your pet....you need a vet like it or not. If you are going to try the dish soap idea people left out the part where when you bathe the pet start by washing it's face, ears and neck. Work your way to the back. If you just dunk the pet in water or start in the millle of the pet the fleas will flee away from the water. They will infets your pets ears and eyes. Not good.

I went to a farm store and asked for flea killer. The man showed me several and told me the most expensive was the best one(sales of course!). Then he said if it didn't work to use Ivory dishwashing liquid to shampoo the cats and to use it in the carpet shampooer also to use on the furniture and carpets. I told him I appreciated all of the info but I didn't think I would buy the expensive chemicals and just use Ivory. It works great! Just use the shampooer with clear water to rinse your carpets well after you shampoo. If you leave the soap residue it will collect dirt quicker. I got rid of the fleas and have used it 2 different times to get the fleas get out of the house!Best wishes!

My initial response to you is if you cant afford flea treatment, then you can't afford a pet, period. BUT if your dog/cat is suffering and you just can't or refuse to pay for flea meds, try bathing them in a solution of Dawn dishsoap and warm water. Leave the shampoo mixture on them for several minutes and rinse well. This will kill alot of the fleas but is only a temporary fix. Buying a cheap capstar tablet from your vet will kill all of the fleas within hours and costs less than $2.

I think clj and people who talk like her should start adopting more pets from shelters or help us euthanize them that way they will see every pet owner as long as they aren't abusive are good people, even being adopted by a beggar and a chance at life is better than no chance at all. Shame on you all.
As for your question, try Dawn soap, I heard it works great, is inexpensive and you need soap regardless. Keep on washing, it will be a tough battle. Also try the first boiling water and light suggestion as well as vacuuming. Good luck.

I think that just this once you will have to pay but try keepoign them inside... all my cats are inside and I haven't seen a flea in 4 years... it's the best way to prevent them so you don't have to worry about paying for the flea medication!

Bite the bullet and buy something. Get something that kills fleas but also worms your cat (which you should be doing anyway). Advantage, Revolution just to name a few. It is applied to the back of the neck, kills fleas and keeps killing fleas for a month. You only need to do it during the flea season.
