The doctor will do a lot of nothing. Go to an Orthopedist, get the MRI done, let them do the hormone shots in office. If those don't work, then upgrade to a neurosurgeon, as the Ortho won't be able to diagnose anything more serious than a muscle problem. (though he might deny that, it's true.)
Always seek a Neurosurgeon for chronic back pain problems. Trust me on this. I spent 6 months in severe pain with Sciatica/Back trouble, my Ortho did everything I said, and more. In the end he told me to "live with the pain." And I told him to "Go **** himself." and went to a neurosurgeon.
The neurosurgeon found the bone fragment rubbing against my sciatic nerve in under 30 seconds of looking at the MRI and diagnosed me with Degenerative Disk Disease. (Lower Lumbar Disks are black and dried out.)
When you're better, start walking right away. It's about the only non-back-strenuous workout you can do that will build up your stomach/back muscles.

Your Dr. will most likely get an MRI of your back - if you are having problems controlling your bowels or with incontinence you should get to an emergency room immediately. It sounds like you may have a bulging or herniated disc.
If you can, take Advil or Aleve as it will help with the inflammation. Alternate heat and cold packs on your back to see if it will ease up. You owe it to yourself to have this checked out.
I hope you feel better soon.

Maybe you should do some stretching exercise. Try Yoga or Pilates once your pain has subsides. Stretching helps to loosen the muscle on your lower back. You could bring your knees over to your body while lying on your back and stretch. Try doing this before you get up in the morning.

Make sure when you are sitting at a desk or your computer that you have a pillow or a back support behind you so that you cannot slouch. Do not cross your legs because that can contribute to getting lower back pain more on one side than the other.

Get a pregnancy test by a doctor.
This test is necessary to ensure that any medications or treatments given don't interfere with a possible pregnancy. X-rays, aspirin and other common medicines need to be avoided until pregnancy is ruled out.
I hope your back feels better and my advice is helpful.

I think a CAT scan would be in order. Elevated or incorrect doses of OTC analgesics is also dangerous. Taking two Vicoden is also inappropriate unless a doctor OKs it especially due to serious side affects of acetaminophen. Please confer with a health care professional or doctor to make a correct diagnosis.

Go to the dr because it sounds like a kidney infection and you'll need antibiotics. You don't necessarily get a fever with those until you are majorly sick and the infection has spread.
