I agree, it is a National disgrace for a vet to be homeless.
some answerers here don't understand how vets become homeless, considering the benefits available to vets.
My experience is that the benifits are a myth. Yes, there are educational benifits, only good if you are on active duty, or a vet living at home with mommy. The benifits don't pay for rent, utilities, food. And who has time to operate a household and go to college full time. Not many people.
The medical benifits are really only good if you are on active duty or were injured on active duty.
My opinion on how the newest veterans become homeless, it's not started by drug addiction. When a person comes out of the military, they are usually pretty clean, and mostly anti drug, because of the culture of the military. They are homeless by pure economic reasons. Lack of adequated paying jobs,if they can get a job, debt to credit cards that these people obtained while on active duty, and not realizing that the penalties are pretty stiff when payments are missed. Car payments also. For the younger vets, it's mostly economic
For the Viet Nam vets, A combination of economic reasons, drugs, a sense of being outcasts, and just from having their brains messed up by that war. It's not their fault. The American people told them they had to go do their duty, and then you all spit on them when they came home. And a lot of you still do it.
Oh, there are lots of bums out on the streets, most of them wearing suits and designer dresses, but don't confuse them with military vets.

As a retired vet surviving a lot of conflicts, I appreciate that you care and agree with your entire question.
It's our government that's to blame. The powers that be control the people in and around congress and are driven by greed. The congress are puppets, both Dem's and Rep's. They really don't care.
According to stats many (65%) of homeless vets end up that way due to the cost of care to treat themselves (whether they suffer from the inability to readjust to society or dependency on narcotics administered while they were in and then dropped cold turkey into the world, etc.). The rest end up that way due to regular failure to do what they should to keep a normal life up, just like the rest of homeless people.
Sometimes homeless are just mentally damaged. The rest are lazy.
Most importantly, NO ONE can judge these people unless they have been through and survived a war or conflict. Some of us are just more comfortable with killing or witnessing killings. Until you have wiped your buddies brains off your face (I have) then don't judge.
Thanks for the great Question!

That's the problem with this Country it gives to other nations, or Countries as you want to call them, and to people that are here Illegally. Just about anybody you could think of. BUT to the Vets and the legal citizens and to our children. It would rather educate the children from other Nations with free or at a discount in the best colleges or any college that is why every one and his mother wants a piece of the American Pie. They all say that they hate this Country and don't want to live here , they just want to reap the benefits of this Country.

Actually with all the VA benefits I don't quite understand how they are still homless. Poor record keeping in the past has been a problem though.
I also don't believe they are forgotten, there are simply to many things to try and help to keep track of them all. Dosn't mean some one did not give support they just are unable to do so at the time.
Perhaps this question is better asked to the upper class that live in ritzy homes and throw money at million dollar under pants while others suffere below them.

I have seen homeless vets .. I have seen people damaged beyond repair, both physically and mentally ... and it upsets me greatly that this country can't find the decency to cater to these people ... it's nothing short of scandalous ... depending on where you live, there aren't enough VA facilities ... it really makes me ill to think that these people, who in many instances have suffered trauma they will never get rid of, are brushed off as bums ... these people need help, and plenty of it ... but do they get it? Nahhhhhh ..... illegal immigrants need our love and understanding ... our own men and women who have served this country are thrown on the scrap heap ... :(

I don't forget about them. It is a shame people are willing to sign up for the military when they can see quite clearly how vets are usually taken care of.

I have never seen any homeless vets. I do not know what I can do about this if I have never encountered one. Unfortunately they are vets. The failure is not on my shoulders it is on their patron...which is supposed to be the government of the US.
