My mother didn't make me smoke a whole pack, as is often the suggestion. She threw me her pack of cigarettes and said, "I don't think you really know how to smoke. Show me." I smoked one in front of her and never again.

That was because my reason for smoking was to sneak around behind her back and even hurt her. So, when she admitted that she knew what I was doing, it took the wind out of my sails, so to speak.

Do you smoke yourself? If you do you can forget about it. If he thinks he is old enough to smoke tell him he is old enough to earn his keep. If he has an allowance take it away, why give him money to see him burn money up in smoke as it damages him. However at 16 he is probably too far gone, thats less than 2 years away from being an adult.

I had a friend whose little brother kept getting caught. HIs dad made him smoke one cigarette after another til he puked all over himself. To this day (10 yrs later) he STILL looks sick when someone smokes around him. I'm sure someone here will say that's abuse but it got the point across to him that's for sure.

A kid is a kid is a kid. If he/she is going to smoke they are going to smoke. There isn't much you're going to do to stop them. I myself have a daughter and she HAS ashma. Well you'd think she would never even think of smoking, BUT she does smoke and she started under peer pressure as she thought/thinks it is cool. BUT If you showed your son some pictures of people who had/have cancer he might re-think his habits. Like maybe a woman who has lost her breast to breast cancer, or someone who has lost his voice box because of throat cancer. These might work. But he most likely won't stop. Smoking or should I say quitting smoking is done only by a person who wants to quit.

Offer to smoke with him and his buddies and tell him you think it is cool. He won't want to do anything that the parents approve of, think is cool or want to do with him.
