There is a story of the early Legion that says that this happened in one of the outposts in Algiers when the Tuareg's were on the war path. I can understand this happening. The flag symbolism was very strong to both sides in those days so it had to be destroyed so it would not be disgraced, and no one in his right mind wants to fall into the desert tribesman's hands alive.You could stay that way for days but you would not enjoy yourself.

I don't know where it began, but it is true and is rule if you want to call it that. The last person to leave a place under attack, say an embassy, is supposed to retire the colors, take the US flag down before they leave. If they do not have time to get out with the flag it is consider better to destroy the flag then letting it become captive, and to kill ones self is looked at as being better than being captive them self.
