DTS. Dolby Digital is not as discreet in channel separation, while DTS is full-range in all 5 channels. DTS sounds better with my experience of the two.
Too bad DTS didn't take off as well as Dobly Digital in the format wars. Politics no doubt. LOL

In reviews of DVDs in high-end video magazines, those which have both DD and DTS always seem to get better reviews on the DTS sound than the DD, but not with a great difference. Theoretically, DTS should be better since less compression is used. However, I doubt that many people could tell the difference. I wonder if those high-end magazine reviewers are being swayed by what they "think" should be better.
However, that being said, whenever I play a DVD that offers both, I always select DTS. I probably can't hear the difference, but why take chances. If your A/V receiver doesn't decode DTS, you'll probably never miss it.

Dolby digital is definite way to go for surround sound.
(1) It is by far the most popular of the two formats, most DVDs are in 5.1 Dolby Digital
(2) 5,1 Dolby Digital is the only choice for surround sound in HD-TV.
Another option would be a universal DVD player that will play both formats, but then you would need a receiver that would play both formats.

this is a on going debate for about 10yrs. they both give you outstanding sound dts is encoded at a higher bit rate & often rated better in reviews but there is really no big difference but in a blind test you know which is which. dts is 3 to 5dbs louder than dolby but it does not mean it gives you better sound. a good test for this is war of the worlds when the tri-pods 1st attack there is a degree of difference but not night & day, on some titles i prefer dts & some dolby it's a matter of taste for me. now there are some dolby ex dvd's that are very agressive like a dts track in all channels like the harry potter series or star wars. i really can't say which is better because i think they both give you outstanding performace & i really perfer both & i don't really think about it as much as long as i'm getting quailty sound for either

DTS uses a higher bit rate, so theoretically more of the original signal is used for DTS. However, DD claims that it's codec is so advanced that it can fit the same sound quality with a reduced bit rate... I would say in practical real world experience, you would need to invest signifigant amounts of money in HT equipment to be able to actually resolve any of that difference.. Using TRUE a/b comparisons (double blind, all levels matched perfectly), on most equipment is unlikely to yield any real differences, although some will swear DTS is better.

DTS - better channel separation & higher sampling rate.
However, lots of DVDs still come with only 5.1 and/or stereo soundtracks. Close Encounters (region 2 UK) has both & I can tell the difference when played through my setup. Most DVD palyers should output both anyway, and if you want to buy a reciever/multi-hannel amp then definately go for DTS. As long as you've enough speakers, of course!

very old debate but the answer is in the bandwidth.
Dolby Digital uses 448kbs
DTS uses 768kbs
DTS uses more data bandwidth which leads in more detailed sound.
The next debate will be Dolby True HD vs DTS HD master audio.
