Ive never seen one example of a convicted murderer/rapist ever going out to live the white picket fence dream that other americans have. They all seem to re-offend at one time or another. Can anyone put me right?

Hey, who wouldn't want free cable, food and Internet? They do not MIND going back that is the problem. Most prisons are an improvement for a lot of criminals.

It does create more informed criminals. They are studying the wrong thing but they are learning about crimes with a higher profit margin and they discuss the risks and the mistakes that caused them to get caught the last time. I was in correction for 5 years and after listening to all the clever games I was wondering if I was in the wrong field. So the answer is yes and no, they do learn a lot but mostly about things that will put them back in prison.

Criminals that feel like there crime was not wrong go to prison trying to get over anyway they can. In their minds their not even supposed to be there.

Yet those that understand the consequences of their crimes do to a certain extent become rehabilitated.

If you send a 18 yr old boy to prison for 25 years after the duration of his sentence he will be locked up for more than 1/2 of his life. He will have become institutionalize, and there for all he will know in his adult life is being told what to do.

Becoming a more clever criminal and being rehabilitated is situational. There are a lot of underlining factors like race, gender, family structure, crime committed, sentence duration, intelligence level, financial class and so on and so on.

It's up to the person!

I just retired from twenty-seven years of corrections work and I can tell you its a load of crap. They do not become more clever, only more brash in their inability and usually easier to catch. Criminals are victims of their nature, they like to set routines and that is usually what gets them caught. They find something they think works and stick with it till they get caught again...and again...and again. Criminals think they are smarter, more clever, and way cooler than everyone else. The opposite is true. Most are below average in intelligence and maturity, suffer personality disorders, are unable to cope with everyday responsibility, and are unable manage relationships, time, and finances. They certainly do not get smarter or more clever. If they did we would n't be able to catch them so easily.

What jail time would create would is time for the criminals to think of even more clever ways to re-offend. If they were truly super intelligent, they would not be there to start.

I am sure there are criminals out there that are very sorry for what they have done. But in my opinion, majority of criminals, once a criminal, always a criminal. Why would they commit crime in the first place? Who knows. Who knows. I think they re-offend most definitely.

You are right...alot are repeat offenders.
Believe it or not...many go back, as its a free bed and meals.

I think what is helping criminal minds more are the shows "Cops", "Investigators", etc on Court TV.

I enjoy the programs, but for those who want to do offenses...it's a great wealth of knowledge.

I'd say jail (especially prisons) create more EDUCATED criminals. Look at what all they can do in prison. They can earn their GED and even a technical trade. They even get more educated in the justice system's loop-holes also. I like to refer to these types of prisoners as "jailhouse lawyers".
