No, he was excited about the gift. Why didn't you give it to him on the day of the surprise? Just laugh it off, this will be a fun story for the future....

well it's kinda your fault, you shouldn't have given him the gift before time, besides did you really expect him to not open it, and why would you even get mad it's his gift anyway, just know that next time you won't do that again if you want it to be a surprise.

Think about it. Wouldn't you be excited to open a gift from someone too close to you? Same was the case with him. He got excited and opened it up.

No, anytime you give someone a present they will be overly tempted to open it as you would. Cut your boyfriend some slack. He is your boyfriend and it is HIS birthday.
Next year don't give it to him until the day of. LOL
