There are a few reasons why people gain weight when they quit smoking. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant. It also affects your metabolism somewhat. Perhaps the most important reasons, though, are psychological: your anxiety is increased from the withdrawal, which typically stimulates overeating; and you have a need to stick something in your mouth.

Fortunately, it really doesn't take much exercise to counterbalance the physical effects, and the exercise itself can have you feeling better, keep you occupied, and make it easier to quit. Just a brisk 30 minute walk is great. Stop and smell the flowers--now that you can smell again!

As far as the psychological effects, just being aware of them is a big help. Keep a glass of water with you--sipping it keeps your hands and mouth occupied, and drinking lots of water helps keep your appetite down and keeps you from snacking. Keep healthy snacks around, and be conscious of what you're eating, being aware that you're probably going to have more cravings than usual.

Are you going to use the patches? Those are a great help. Having support from family and friends and keeping yourself occupied really help.

Not as long as you watch what you eat and how often you eat. I quit smoking and had to eliminate sweets and fatty fried foods too. didn't gain any weight, that was my second time. The first time I found myself looking for something sweet about the time I would be smoking(on the phone, after dinner, right before bed, etc.) and gained 30 pounds.

The only way one can gain weight is by intake of excess calories. There are two primary reasons people gain weight when they stop smoking: 1) eat more to compensate for lack of cigarettes and 2) slower metabolism because of lack of cigarettes. There is no reason you have to gain weight. Instead of eating chocolate, eat raw vegetables. It's hard to quit and weight gain can make you want to start again. Stick to your plan and you'll do fine. Good luck.

People who gain weight after quitting gain it from eating and drinking more, smokers are used to having something in hands and mouth so they go for foods and drinks (not always healthy) so if you don't change your eating habits because of quitting you should not gain weight.

Umm when you quit smoking you don't gain weight.
You gain weight from eating. Not giving up smoking.
So if you give up smoking and you find the craving to eat, have a full glass of water and the craving should go away.
But giving up smoking alone just doesn't make your body gain weight magically.

I QUIT AND I GAINED 30 LBS. IN ONE MONTH. SO I STARTED AGAIN. BUT REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO WORK ON ONE THING AT A TIME. STOP THE SMOKING THEN , WORK ON YOUR WEIGHT. CALL YOUR LOCAL HOSPITAL TO SEE IF THEY HAVE A QUIT SMOKING CLASS, IF THEY DO ,THEN YOU WILL MEET PEOPLE THAT NEED SOME HELP JUST LIKE YOU.

I think people gain weight because they stick more food in their mouth because they don't have a cigarette in it or to deal with the anxiety. Bottom line, they eat more.
