You can buy hair dyes that are made from natural plant products; check at your supermarket or drugstore. The ones for darkening the hair are made from walnut, I believe.

They won't give you the subtlety or the "natural" look of artificial dyes, but if you are worried about chemicals, then that is the way to go.

If you mean how you would like to tint your hair back to natural without using peroxides or amonia based tints , I would have to say going semi permanant would be the next best way.

It's a direct tint , so even though it won't last for more than 4 weeks you will not have to worry about any harsh chemical deposits.

Your only other choice but not suggested would be the very natural Henna dyes, it comes in a powder form and warm water is added to create a pasty consistency before applying it. ( you can add coffee to it to give add richness to the tints tone)

Being that this is a metallic dye, if you ever want to go back to a lighter tone , you will have to grow it out , because it is non removeable product.

Many styling products offer line that provided a colorant that can wash out the next time you shampoo your hair. All just using products that give a wet look will make your hair look darker. All wet hair appears darker than if it is dry. Either way, you will be able to see how your hair looks being darker before you risk coloring it with dye that can be very hard to undo without at least doing some damage to your hair. Henna might work but even though it is organic it can cause problems such as fading to a very unnatural color or if you decide to dye it later.

Henna.

A dried plant powder ~ I think. Anyway, it's totally organic, wonderfully conditions your hair, gives shine and lasts about as long as "permanent dye". You can find many henna options at health food stores.
