It says it can withstand 270 pounds and my TV is only 75 pounds.

Yes you can. as long as the stand can hold the net weight of the new 50-inch set there should not be no problems. Make sure when you remove the old TV set to re-adjust the screws and nuts once again for security.

You also need to compare the dimensions (length and width). If any of the TV is hanging off, it is not going to be stable and I would hate to spend money on a TV that big and it not be stable.

Just put some police tape 5 feet around the tv in all directions so when it falls you dont kill someone...
