I believe it means save our souls.

I think this is the original meaning. Even though it is plausible to think that it comes from Morse code letters ...---... I think the SOS signal for help is older than Morse code. Also, one would think that ---...--- is just as easy to transmit.

In flag code SOS is also transmitted in a very simple way.

OK, I looked in Wikipedia - it IS from Morse code...

It is an internationally recognized distress signal. In Morse Code it would be:
