I only know one person with HIV. He has lived with it for over ten years, and seems pretty healthy. I still get a bit weirded out around him! I know I shouldn't, but it just scares me!
You know too, he and his wife had a baby while he was infected, the baby is about 5 now, and is not HIV positive. There are many things about this infection I don't know! His wife isn't HIV either.

It depends on whether it is HIV positive or negative.
If it is positive, it could lead to AIDS and eventually death. The process is very slow and agonizing. Could be a couple of months - or it could be several years.
If it is negative, I think they can live out the rest of their lives. There is no cure or treatment for it, so they will always have it.
HIV is not like cancer. It cannot and does not go into remission. It is a life-long, sometimes life-ending, disease.

Depends on the medical care. Here in New York City, I know many people who have been infected for over 20 years. They receive excellent medical care & medications. They also have responsibly managed the disease.
