I agree stay at home parties are best for that age group. Sandwiches, hot dogs, just about any finger food will work. Maybe even just cake and drinks. If your son has a favourite character use that as a theme, Barney, Blues Clues, Teletubbies, Sesame Street etc... Keep the kids busy by maybe showing a movie and doing a craft.

Stay at home and ask some of the adults to make and bring something that they know the other kids will eat.
The age range is huge so your normal party games are out the window. The older kids will entertain the younger ones. If you really want to play some games, then musical bumps/statues or pass the parcel is usually safe and fun for all ages.
Christmas will just have been and although it's a 1st birthday and special but he will remember nothing about it so ask everyone to come with just a small gift or money instead that you could put towards buying something big that you'd like for him - might even be a new buggy or something practical you'd not otherwise think to spend money on. I have 3 boys - been through it and learned each time! There are so many brilliant toys on the market it's hard not to get carried away but there's only so much a 1 year old can play with and appreciate.
Send out invitations with a start and finish time so everyone knows before hand that there is a time limit. Nothing worse than trying to get on with the night time routine with a house full! If folk know the party is coming to an end then, in my experience, a few will start with the clearing up!
The main rule is that mum has helping hands to organise and tidy up so you can be relaxed and enjoy his special day rather than wonder what happened with the day when it's over.

Dont take this the wrong way but he wont remember it, just make sure that you have a cake for the children and maybe some simple party games for them all to join in, your son will probably be getting fussed over by the adults and the children, as for a theme just go with something that he likes and make sure you take lots of photo's

Due to the unawareness of extreme youth I think you can `err' in the direction of too much too soon! You and immediate family, enjoying the moment on his behalf is really a nice idea; traditional party at home, with a nice cake and some pretty deco's and some home games is probably more sensible than you realise; I KNOW how important it is for the PARENTS of a little one; but they are simply too young to take it all in!!! So, get some nice decos and create some nice nosh; take a few memorable pics, and don't make it too long either: attention spans are very short with littlies!!! I hope you all have a lovely time!

Keep it simple/cheap. I'd just have close family there. As others have said he wont even know what's going on, he'll be happy with some wrapping paper and a bit of cake in my experience. As long as he's happy that's the important thing. Who's this party for after all. You've got years ahead of you of themed birthdays, venues, and expensive party bags. Make the most of it. A little tea party is enough, especially after Christmas when money is often short.

Have it home. Either buy or make the cake. You could go to a Party supply store and get ideas about themes and then find stuff that will be cheaper. Since he won't remember don't spend a lot of money on supplies. Good luck!

I would invite people to your home. I have 3 children and the best expierence came at home. My youngest daughter was home and most comfortable in her own environment. At a year the party is for the parents more so then the child. You could do fun stuff like bob for apples, and pin the tail on the donkey... fun for most ages. I also at a year still had so much stuff I didn't know what to do with. So for gifts I asked for people to bring their favorite hard cover book for my daughter. Now she has a library along with all her goodies she had before.

Your son isn't going to remember any of this anyways. Just bake a cake. Eat ice cream and maybe have hamburgers or something easy. There is no need to go all out for such a young one. 4 months to 16 years don't have a lot in common so just cook and make it short.

firstly if there are more adults then children its not a pary for your child its a social event for you, i agree some adults but not when they outnumber the children,
it should be a small home party with no children over 5 years approx, and food they will all eat
