I'm a 19 yr old female, and people always give me odd looks because I drive stick. If you drive both, which do you prefer, automatic or stick?

Missy, its because they dont know how! I cant stand driving automatic, its so lazy like or something. Your more more alert, did you know that 95 percent of all accidents are cars of automatic! I always tell people they should drive standard. you save more gas also.

Hello!! :o) I think it's great that you drive a stick. I think everyone should at least know how to. At one time - a person couldn't get a driver's license without proving that they could shift for themselves. As for what I prefer... it depends. There is nothing quite like the feeling of control one gets when driving a really good stick shift. [with an easy to engage clutch] But some manual transmission are more work than pleasure. Some automatics are really pretty good [at least these days] and they're certainly easier to drive. I think a lot of people want an automatic while sitting in rush hour traffic and a manual transmission when going for a long Sunday drive. Craig!! :o)

Kudos to you for being in the minority. I drive both and each has it's own advantages. Stick shift is more fun, more torque, and better fuel economy. Automatic is more convenient for driving in towns where there is a lot of stop and go driving. Some of the most fun driving I have had is in a 1980 Chevy Chevette with a 4 speed.

Out of the 20 years I've been driving, I owned an automatic for 6 months. It wasn't by choice, it was all I could afford at the time. I then later bought a stick.

My next car will most likely be a stick.

63' Beetle - stick
74' Super Beetle - stick
82' Celebrity wagon - Auto :(
84' Cavalier - stick
97' Honda Civic - stick

I can drive stick no problem.

It depends on the car I am driving, if it is a sports car I like stick, but If I am driving something like a truck or suv, I prefer automatic.

Stick, absolutely. I want to drive the car, not have the car drive me. You can anticipate the proper gear a lot better than an automatic shifter.

i complain every time i have to drive a d@mn automatic, they are so boring and i feel like i have no control and the acceleration sucks. i love driving manuals, it is soo much more fun.

and people who complain about it being hard in the city can shut the hell up, i live in southern California, its has some of the worst traffic in the country, and its not that hard, even during rush-hour traffic its not that bad

I prefer stick, there more fun, have more torque, and you can push start it if the battery dies!
