I believe it is a little of both. Even if you join in peace time, it does guarantee that there will always be peace. That is the chance you take when you raise your right hand.

People join the military for a variety of reasons and sometimes a number of reasons. After 9/11, people were incensed over what happen and wanted to join the military to fight for their country. Many times the military will offer opportunities to learn skills to use after their service. Others join because they come from a military family and want to continue the family tradition. We have the most advanced and best equipped military in the world. A lot is done to minimize injuries and death. Everyone who is in the military are there because they volunteered. From what I understand, re-enlistments are also up.

First of all -- it is a MISTAKEN Belief that people join the Military because they have committed crimes -- that is DEFINITELY NO -- because most of the positions are positions of trust -- you are responsible for Government Equipment and Resources, and if you have commmitted a crime -- does anyone in their right mind think the Military is going to hire you? NO -- definitely no.

Me, I joined for two reasons: One is for the Country -- YES, I wanted to "Support and Defend" the Constitution of the United States ... and being the grandchild of Polish Immigrants, and the child of a Paraplegic WWII Veteran, that desire to serve a Country that allowed us to Learn, have an Education, own our own property, and provide for our families with the freedoms that Americans enjoy was definitely on my mind.

Secondly, there was the Career, Educational Opportunities as well as the benefits -- and as the oldest of siblings that had to bury our parents as very young adults, this provided all of us not only the opportunity to serve our country, but to also have HONORABLE Careers -- and of all us siblings -- the remainder still are serving, and I am Retired -- so we have definitely served for a long, long time.

I joined the military in 1991 for two reasons. Firstly, I had a sense of civic pride and I saw military service as a way to give back to the larger community. Secondly, the military offered me greater responsibility in my career field right out of graduate school than would the civilian sector. More than 15 years later, I am now a civilian and I am grateful for my time in the Air Force.

I believe its for both.

When I got out of high school I had every intention of joining but especially after 9/11 I was pumped...

I joined Nov 01 and love ever min of it. I see it as a career because Im not getting out until the Army tells me that there is no way I can go on a convoy with a cane and arthritis....

Being that I was military, I strongly back and support our men and women who are in the military now.

But I fail to see where the threat of Saddam Hussain to the USA was ever real.

Osama Bin Laden was the nut behind a terror attack. Not a military movement.

Bin Laden was the one who caused 9-11...

But our President "George Oil Bush" and Vice President Dick Haliburton Cheney" didn't care at all about Bin Laden.

Hmmmmm! Let's see, Bin laden attacks the US, and the US attacks Hussain???

Hmmmmm???

I think it is a little of both. It also offers job security, which seems to be becoming more valuable.
