Although it was not diagnosed as Sleep Paralysis at the time, 1980 I went to Stanford Clinic, I now know that I had some form of this disorder. Mine started with a overwhelming feeling of being tired all of a sudden. I would have to lay down. I would fall into a sleep but in this sleep I could hear everything going on around me but I could not move or wake myself up enough to move. I could hear people saying my name and telling me to get up and I would tell my mind to move my arm, to open my eyes but I could not do anything but lay there until I became awake enough to get myself up. I also had other signs that I knew I was going into this sleep state. Besides the feeling very tired in the beginning and needing to lay down, I would get a glazed feeling over my eyes, this would happen all of a sudden, no real warning . I had to be prescribed a medication that would keep me awake for fear this would happen when I was driving, this overwhelming need to fall asleep. This lasted for about a year and I was so miserable during this time because there were days I was tired all day and continue to go into this sleep state. I now have been diagnosed with Lupus. If this had any part in this sleep paralysis I do not know to this day.,

Most people suffer from this at one time or another. At its most common, it is that half awake/half asleep feeling, or a sense of pressure on your front or back. At worst it is being conscious whilst still being unable to move. It is believed that this is where the idea of the incubus/succubus first originated. A more modern answer would relate it to the normal paralysis that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, also known as REM atonia. This is what keeps (most!) people from moving around during sleep or acting out their dreams. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is awakened from an REM state into essentially a normal fully awake state, but the bodily paralysis is still occurring. This causes the person to be fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, this state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations.
If you're interested in others experiences and/or analysing your own, you could fill out the Waterloo Unusual Sleep Experiences Questionnaire at http://watarts.uwaterloo.ca/~acheyne/spquest01.html.

I just discussed this subject at my job. A co worker's son suffered from it. She passed by his bedroom door one day and while passing she happened to hear him calling out to her. He told her that he couldnt move. Felt like something was sitting on his chest. She took him to the hospital and come to find out. It's cause by eating too much fatty foods. (ex:fast foods). If she hadn't gotten him to the doctors in time he would have gone into cardiac arrest. His arteries were clogging up. I look forward to hear the other possibilities why this occurs.

Yes I have had it,, mostly I have it during nightmares or during flashbacks from some stuff in my past. I can't open my eyes, or scream or move,, I swear I can feel someone or something over me. Sometimes I feel like if I could just move one finger or eyes,, I would snap out of it,, sometimes I feel like if I do anything the person over me will see and hurt me very badly.
Mostly when I have them it is very evil feeling and until I found out that there's actually a name for it and alot of ppl have it, I thought I was posessed or cursed.

Yes, it's horrible. I'm awake but my body doesn't know it.I can't see, speak,or move. Sometimes I have difficulty breathing as it feels like lead weights are piled on my chest.Usually I quickly realize whats happening and try to relax and let my mind go back to sleep.
