Wednesday evening my husband and went out to eat. we go to this place very often and get the fried calamari almost everytime..well this time we both got very very sick Saturday morning. . We are still sick and still having some severe symptoms of food poisoning. Is it possible we got it from the calamari? Also we went to eat friday and the only thing we ate in common was a ceasar salad. and this place makes them with anchovies...so that was a thought as well.

Fully cooked, piping hot calamari is a poor vehicle for foodborne illnesses.

HOWEVER, homemade caesar salad dressing is a common source of contamination because it is traditionally made with raw eggs.

Overnight is long enough to incubate some foodborne illnesses, but not the big bacterials (E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter or Shigella). Those tend to take 1 to 3 days to sink in.

One possibility is that one of the foodhandlers is sick. This is common with norovirus (causes stomach flu). Foodhandlers sick with noro can spread it to food from dirty hands if they don't wash up with hot water and soap.

Have you considered the possiblity that YOU might be at fault? Did you know that most foodborne illnesses are caused by unsafe cooking practices at home? Yes they are. What have you cooked lately? Anything that required handling raw meat or seafood? Eggs? Left something on the counter a little too long?

It doesn't matter that it was fried. It matters that it wasn't refrigerated. Try taking Pepto Bismol. It coats the stomach & may prevent any bacteria from attaching to your digestive tract. Drink plenty of water to flush your system. Good luck.

Anything that is infected, stale or rotten can cause food poisoning irrespective of what it is. Also, if you eat with unclean hands or use unclean utensils, you are at risk.

If the calamari was cooked, it is unlikely. More likely is the salad dressing.
