I am 22 and interested in joining the marines. how long will i be enlisted for. I don't want to make a career out of the military. Is it 4 years? Also, I have eczyma which is a condition that at times causes small rashes to appear on my skin. Will the Marine Corps Care?

By the way please don't respond in order to push your political rhetoric. Don't waste my time. Why would some of you come on this site to make stupid comments about dying in an "unjust" war? I am an adult who has a full time job. I think I should be allowed to decide what I feel is Just or not. I didn't make this post to start an arguement the war, only to find out what options I have WHEN I join.
Thank You to those of you who actually responded intelligently to my question.

When I served in the early 80's, The tours lasted 4 years active duty, and 2 years inactive/active reserve. It was your choice for the reserve time, whether it was active/inactive.

Absolutely check with your recruiter on all questions. He has the answers.
My dad argues that Angelbaby may be wrong on the 8 year thing. He said back in the dark ages (1960's for him) it was a 6 year committment (usually a 2 active then 4 reserve, or 3/3 or 4/2) The 3/3 and the 4/2 guys usually got the schools battalions and the 2/4 got the M-14 and a ticket to Nam. but that was back then.
You definately need to talk to a Recruiter to get the straight poop on this question.

First off every Marine Corps contract is 8 years it is the active time that changes between 4 or 5 years Active Duty depending on your MOS (job) ie: if you have a 4 year Active Contract you will have a 4 year IRR Contract (Individual Ready Reserve) which is also known as Inactive Reserves
As for the eczema you would have to talk to a recruiter.

When you become a US Marine, You have a 4 year commitment and active reserve time and in-active reserve
time totaling 4 years. The US Marine Corps will not take you if there is anything wrong with you health wise. Check
with a US Marine recruiter and inquire there instead of Yahoo Questions and Answers.

As the Marines will put a lot of time and trouble in you the term is four years but if you go in for the right reasons and with the right expectations(low) you should do alright. You may die. Know that up front but keep your head down and your *** covered it will be unlikely. Don't be a hero, entering a fire zone and doing your job there is heroic enough. Talk to the recruitment office, the joke is that the recruitment Sgt. will lie to his mother to to get her in, but if you get some of the skinny about what YOU WANT before hand they will tell you what you want to know. But if even if your just a private in a squad in some goddess forsaken hole protecting your country you will be a Marine. That is something you will always be and be proud of being.

Do they wont have a problem with that. I dont know if the Marines offer it but the Army offers a 2 year enlistment. If not you will have a choice between 4 or 6 years. Usually if you sign for 6 years you can come in as and E3.
Just go talk to your recruiter and he should help you out. Who knows maybe you will change your mind and make a career out of it.
Oh and dont worry about all these people that talk negative about the military. You will get it a lot but you just learn to ignore them because most of them just talk bad about the military because they couldnt get into it.... ;)

Don't pay any attention to these liberal peacenik idiots responding to your question. Hopefully they will die someday at the hands of a terrorist then we can kick back and laugh and say see we told you so. Anyway...the skin thing, it is treatable and as long as it wouldn't interfere with your training I don't think they would care. I was in the Army myself. The Marines are cool, but make sure when you go in it's because you want to be a Marine, not a cook, an MP, or a desk jockey, or whatever. The Marines DO NOT guarantee you what you will be doing once you get out of boot camp, like the other branches do. You may want to be a cook, and they will certainly put that down as your goal, but if they need you in the desert on the front lines firing an M-16, that is where they are going to put you. So if you do choose the Marines, make doubly-damn sure it is a Marine you want to be.

first off - thank you! you don't know me and yet you're willing to join the Corps for me -- thank you!
4 years is the basic stint. They may still have the 2/2 option -- 2 full active then 2 reserves. if you have any college your rank will increase upon enlisting. you will also want to talk to yur recruiter about any special skills or interests.
Good Luck & God BLess in your decision!

Your best bet would be to talk to a recruiter and find out everything you want to know, but in the meantime join military.com and go to the wannabe section of the Marine forums and ask it there your sure to get an answer.

You will be assigned to the Marines and be their medical person.
