Why is New York called "The Big Apple"?

"The "Big Apple" is a nickname or alternate toponym for New York City and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its popularity since the 1970s is due to a promotional campaign by the New York Convention and Visitor's Bureau. Its earlier origins are less clear.

One explanation cited by the New-York Historical Society and others is that it was first popularized by John Fitzgerald, who first used it in his horse racing column in the New York Morning Telegraph in 1921, then further explaining its origins in his February 18, 1924 column. It comes from a nick name that developed because of the fact that ever vice known to man is available there. The apple being the forbidden fruit in the "Garden of Eden". I can remember living near the city and saying something to the effect that, " I was going to go take a bite of the Apple tonight." What I meant was go into New York and do some partying and see what vice I could get into. I think that At one time, new York was called "Sin City", and it was a derivative of that? I could be wrong, but that is what I have believed for most of my adult life, which is plenty.

REAL ANSWER is not really known but one of the widely believed is that it dates back to the 20's whan bands woulds tour, the Big Apple was a popular dance, and the referred to NYC as the Big Apple as it was the top show and top pay.
