When I worked retail, people would leave dirty diapers in the store, out in the parking lot, wipe their kids butt, nose, hands on the clothes. And then the trash, soda cups, gum wrappers, GUM, let the stroller babies throw their snacks on the floor and then of course ground it into crumbs with the stroller. Parents let the kids open toys to play with while they shop "oh, we're buying that" and then I find it dumped somewhere later.
Do people just have no respect anymore?

Many people just don't care. They think that it's your job (your one and only responsibility) to clean up after them or that by messing something up, they're giving someone else a job who wouldn't otherwise have had one. (Which doesn't make a lot of sense, but there you go.) Also, if a customer is mad about something you can't change (like store policies or lack of certain products), they might mess something up and think that it's fair because, after all, you wouldn't do anything to help them.
While I hate to use the word, it really is a lack of respect. And it doesn't seem limited to one type of person, either. Economic status, skin color, education level -- even people who have no children can (and have!) made just as much mess or been just as hateful as those who do.
I think everyone should have to work a retail job and try dealing with horrible people while making less than minimum wage. It isn't fun.

I would never do anything like the things you mentioned, with the exception of kids grabbing and opening toys and lollies that have been purposely put there for that reason at the checkouts.... It makes me mad that these 'kid magnets' are placed in easy reach, I assume so that when the child grabs the item and opens it you feel obligated to buy it. It's hard enough trying to unload your shopping without having a child in your trolly with their hands grabbing at everything in easy reach.
In cases like this I would just take the item from the child (then you are left with a screaming child that wants back what you have taken) and leave it with the checkout assistant.
I will not be tricked into buying something I did not intend to buy.

It is so true! I work food retail and parents would let them kids put their hands right into fresh food bins to pick out cookies or scones. I think it goes beyond disrespect. I think parents just don't want to teach children manners or responsibility for their actions. It's like we've all become too privileged for basic social graces. I think it's a very sad state of affairs!

You hit the nail on the head.
Just like they are raising their kids is the way they were raised.
They don't care about anybody else's property, half the time they don't care about their own stuff.
These are the same kids that don't know how to say "yes ma'am" or "yes sir" or "please" or "thankyou" or any of the things that make a person someone that is respected and respects others.
And I blame all those "experts" that say it is wrong to discipline your children. That's a bunch of B.S. as is obvious when you see how kids act these days.

How about taking the new pair of shoes from the store, replacing it with their old ones & leaving without paying? Half-eaten sandwiches & cookies left between the shelves & other merchandise? List could go on, people just don't take responsibility for anything anymore.

so what your really saying is why are parents so nasty not people. well i have children and parents should not be allowing this to happen i have also seen alot of UGLY behavior and its no excuse but parenting is a big job and i suppose people just get tired , lazy,etc..i have never ever done that, then again i am one of a kind. whether your a parent and your taking your kids to the shops or whether your a person just shopping there is no excuse for anyone to behave inappropriately in public places, there is certainly no excuse to be dirty either. obviously people don't have respect for other places where people can just pick up the pieces for them but what really gets to me is the self respect that people don't seem to have, lack of morals and so forth , i can never work out why people have to be so darn gross just because they can................

People out shopping or driving their vehicles are disrespectful and hostile because of the "Rat Race". Population is now 300 million. Everyone's in a rush no matter what they are doing, including eating.
You stay well.

I don't think it's just shopping, I think it's everywhere. The public is spending more and more time cocooning in their homes, and less time interacting with others, so people are becoming increasingly separated from each other, with expressions running from intolerance to a kind of passive, anonymous hostility.
