Mavis is an old name and would certainly be perceived as a bit old-fashioned, but those names are popular right now. It is believed to be of old French origin and means a small bird or thrush. From France the name migrated to Scotland, and there came to mean the harbinger of spring, the first sign of spring.

We have a new little granddaughter who is four months old and her name is Hannah - another very old and classic name.

I think a classic name is preferable to the trendy names. All names have their own strength and beauty. Don't let people persuade you not to use a name you really like. If you name your daughter Mavis she will have a unique and unusual name, and it will suit her.

Is your daughter born yet? Do you think she is a Mavis, a harbinger of spring? Does it seem right to you? If it does, then her name is Mavis.

I hope these thoughts help.

Isn't that a boy's name? That was the first impression I had and I researched it on babynamesworld.com and they had male listed for the name. That might embarrass the girl.

Even so, it's a nice sounding, unique name. It's not very common- just letting you know. My parents thought my name was more common than it was when they named me, and said they wouldn't have named me it if they'd known how unusual it is. I like having an unusual name though, so there's nothing wrong with that.

Mavis is also the name of a tire company, or something like that... kind of embarrassing for a girl.

On the other hand, kids don't get teased much for their names anymore. My parents said that people did when they were in school, but I'm a high school studend and I can't remember once in my childhood someone getting teased for their name. Kids are taught to be more tolerant now, I think. Even so, having a weird name does embarrass kids, even if other people don't point it out.

Hope I helped. Good luck with your naming and everything.

babynamesworld.com does have Mavis as being male, but they are wrong. It is definitely a girls name. To the people who said it was an old people's name, News Flash !!! Old people were once babies. They were once kids. There is a difference between old-fashioned and being just for old people. It is an old-fashioned name and that is not a reason not to choose it. There are old ladies named Jenny, too.
I personally don't care for Mavis, not because it is old-fashioned or uncommon, but just because I don't like it's sound. I like the meaning, though. Little Bird or Thrush.
I think it is nice to use old-fashioned names.

There's nothing wrong with Mavis. It's a strong name and sure to bring out the character of your child. Everyone has different opinions about names, so trust your own instincts.
Good luck! =)

I'm sorry, but everytime I hear "Mavis" I think of that computer software program Mavis Teaches Typing. I think I'd try something else.

Well i believe that a name is what gives us our character. A name should mean something to you and if Mavis is a name that you feel strongely about then I dont see why you shouldnt. Congrads by the way!

MAVIS.
It sounds like the name for a rough woman with all of the following:
-big hands
-dirty, pink rollers in her hair
-cracked and peeling lips, and
-a cigarette hanging from the corner of her mouth.
