red stakes are lateral hazards,
yellow stakes are water hazards,
white stakes are out of bounds.
Out of bound has no options stoke & distance (2 strokes) rehit from the original spot.
Yellow & red have three identical options with one subtle difference.
!,Rehit the original shot (stroke & distance penalty).
2.Within two club lengths from point of entry (one stroke penalty)
3. Play the ball as it lies in th hazzard No Penalty.

The additional Water hazard option
4a. Yellow stakes allow you take the ball back as far as you like keeping the point of entry between your drop point and the flag (one stroke penalty).

Kristy nailed it. Also, they will often put a black and white striped pole in the middle of the fairway. This designates 150 yards to the pin.

Also, the color of the flag (on the green) indicates its position. Usually Red is forward, Blue is Back and White is Middle.

totally not true. okay, i know these for a fact because i play golf almost every day. =]

red stakes are lateral hazards, yellow stakes are water hazards, and white stakes are out of bounds. [Lol i have a lot of experiences with those!] Don't get mixed up with lateral and water hazards, because they are usually near eachother, but they aren't the same.

They have different rulings, and different options, and if you want to know them, just ask :]

I believe red means out of bounds, yellow is a hazard, and I don't know what white is, unless its the 100yd marker
