In the south - a smile, a nod and/or a hello.
In the north - avoid eye contact.
In the west - keep your gun in the holster.

You are self-conscious and insecure. People with strong airs thus make you feel odd. The best is to understand that you do NOT OWE anyone (strangers) any particular recognition in public. On the other hand, when being introduced, meeting someone new at work or school and such, it is important that you acknowledge them in a similar fashion...if they reach their hand, grab theirs and shake it. If they say "What;s up?" respond in similar fashion, when meeting a new co-worker, introduce yourself properly to make it easier to work together later on: "Hi, I am Susan and I work in Accounting. Nice to meet you!"

A smile, nod, wave, or brief "hi!" are all fine. But please do not ask any question unless you intend to actually listen to the response. It's rude. Just give a friendly greeting :-)
Good luck with your shyness. You can overcome it :-)

a small polite smile and/or nod will always work. sdon't start asking how do you do or anyhtng like that unless you want to start a conversation.
