usually having imaginary friends means that person has an emotional problem and is looking for acceptance because maybe something tragic happened to them in their life.
I suppose they're cool as long as you don't see their imaginary friends too.

OK..having imaginary friends is not a problem but it can become uncool if their personality swings..going from one identifiable person to an unknown character.
This dissociation problem is evidence that your friend may need professional help.

It just depends, really...some of the most talented people had 'imaginary friends'...to keep them company, that is where some of them developed their amazing talents for impersonations..so, if you will wait a while while I ask Nick...lol....
