You're going to get a million different answers to this question because everyone has their favorite dog - even if it doesn't meet your needs.
You need to consider:
-Space. Do you have a large yard? Will a dog have room to exercise? If not, a large dog (great dane, german shepherd, lab, retriever) or a high energy (border collie, jack russell, whippet)dog may not be for you.
-Family. How young are the kids? If they are under 8, then a very small dog (chihuahua, shih tzu, Italian Greyhound, pomerainian) may not be for you. Also, a large sized dog isn't great until kids have control of their bodies (6 and up) - meaning great danes, various mastiffs, borzois, greyhounds, etc.
-Attention. How much do you work? How often are you home? Many breeds of dogs do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. These include all the toy dogs, and some of the larger family dogs (greyhounds, mastiffs, etc). These dogs should not be left alone for more than 3-5 hours regularly. If you can't offer a TON of stimulation, and I mean hours a day, then a Border Collie would be a TERRIBLE idea for you.
-Money. Toys and large breed dogs should be avoided if you are on limited funds. Toys eat less, but high quality food greatly improves their life. They also are prone to VERY expensive accidents and will probably need teeth cleaning once a year. Large dogs eat alot, poop alot, and tend to have hip problems - this can be VERY expensive to treat.
-Responsibility. How much responsibility do you want? A hound cannot EVER be brought outside in an open area without a leash. Are your "small cousins" going to open up doors without accounting for the dog? Once a sighthound (saluki, borzoi, whippet, greyhound, afghan, italian greyhound, etc) sees something it likes, it will not stop to listen to calls. Once a husky has gotten a taste of the wild, it will continue to run to enjoy it.
-Is breeding important to you? If not, why not get a younger rescue dog? Lab and shepherd mixes are GREAT with kids. They'll bark at strangers and be gentle with the kids. Be sure to go to a no-kill shelter that offers health guarantees.
-Is age important to you? There are thousands of 18 months and younger dogs that needs homes. There are thousands more older dogs who also need homes. You can get purebreds from breed rescue groups. By getting a dog that's been owned, you can have some sort of idea with what to expect. With a puppy, it's kind of a crapshoot.
Your best bet is to investigate some dogs breeds that you are attracted to and go from there. Talk to reputable breeders. Post a few breeds on here. Right now, your question is so broad that no one can really make a great recommendation. Once you have it narrowed down, you'll get much better answers.
I'm going to provide a few links for you. Enjoy! : )

you should go someplace, like the akc's website for instance, and do a little research on different types of breeds first. This should help you determine the the breed that best suits you. too many people get certain breeds of dogs for the wrong reasons, and most always it's the dog that suffers for it. Usually they land in a pound or rescue shelter because the owner found out that this just wasn't what they expected. for instance .......larger breeds generally need more yard space and exercise... can the prospective owner provide these?? Beagles, quite friendly and lovable..........but....they are strong willed, and can be difficult to train..does the prospective owner have the time and patience for this?? You should find these things out before you make any decisions. It would serve the best interests of you and the dog both, so please choose wisely.

I have owned lots and lots of different dogs in my lifetime. I think (from my experience) that a boston terrier would be perfect. They are the great pets to have. But if you want more of an guard dog then an Olde English Bulldogge would be fabulous. They love kids and are very protective. They are not like the English Bulldog, so don't mistake them. The Olde English Bulldogge breed is only 50% English Bulldog, the other 50% is pit bull, american terrier, and bull mastif! Hope this helps.
You can also go to puppyfind.com and they show different dogs and all their grooming needs. They have charts that tell how much of a guard dog they are and so forth. Just what you are looking for.

Well there are many dogs that fit that........german shepherd, lab, golden retriever.etc but since you have smaller cousins around my advise is not a giangtic dog but maybe medium to small size.
From my personal experience , rat terriers, jack russel terriers, shiba inu have been great dogs, great with small children and easy to train. Also the they are pretty much low grooming maintanince needed. A dog raised along with children will be protective of those it was raised with. If you don't know what rat terriers and jack russel terriers are.....have you seen My Dog Skip, the movie? If you have, that was a jack russel terrier and jacks and rat terriers are closely related. Also try a toy fox terrier, they are more a one person dog so that would make them protective!

Labs,
Golden Retriver (grooming can keep the cousins busy)
Dalmatian (Some are really REALLY good with kids, others are not)
Black and White Border Collie....PERFECT! They are VERY EASY to train, VERY good with kids, and can be trained to be protective. Grooming is as easy as a bath once a month and a little brushing every weekend.
If your little cousins are not interested in grooming the new pal (which i doubt), try a German Shepherd.....(They are short-haired)
Hope that helps!!!

With children you are better off not getting a dog that is proctective. Especially with other children coming in and out of a house.
If they aren't well trained, then they can sometimes get triggered by something they perceive as a threat and bite.
