Lol maybe this is just a pet peeve - but I HATE when people have me on my speaker phone and they don't tell me, and especially, if there's other people around ughhh
Am I the only one?

I would very innocently begin talking about personal things he/she has told you when you sense you are on speaker phone. It is a sure way for them to quickly take you off it, and to be concerned about what you might say the next time. At least in the future, they will be motivated for personal reasons to give you a warning! I have personal experience with this with a friend who was too lazy to hold the phone, whether she had a houseful or not!!!! I asked her how her boyfriend's impotence situation was going?!!! He really does have a problem with this, and it always bothers me when she tells me these kinds of details about things!!! Too much information!!! It killed two birds with one stone, as I know her boyfriend was there, and she got in trouble for talking a little too much! Now, she rarely puts me on speaker, and doesn't tell me nasty details of her sex life!!!! lol

Yes, it is rude.
When having a phone conversation there is the assumption that it is private between the two people on the phone, so putting a person on speaker when there are others around violates that trust.
Being put on speaker when the person is alone, but needs their hands for something else is not rude though, just practical.

I know, I do not care for the speaker phone thing either. Maybe it is a bit rude, but suppose who all is in the speaker phone room. I can always tell when someone has me on speaker phone- it sounds really hollow.

It is absolutely rude. You should expect that unless you're told differently, you are speaking to only the person you are talking to on the phone. What if you said something that was for the other person's ears only and another party listened in? I can't
tell anymore when someone has me on speaker phone now unless they tell me. But nope, you're not the only one!

:D I'm guilty of this one.. I put my mom on speaker phone when she calls me.. usually because I'm driving.. and I have my kids in the car and my mom will saying something out of context.. and I remind her she's on speaker.. she always gets embarrassed.. so I make an extra effort to tell her she's on speaker before she starts talking :D
I don't think it's rude.. speaker phone is just a convenient way of multi-tasking :D If you're about to say something and you wish to keep it private.. ask the person your talking with.. if you're on speaker.. trust that they'll be honest with you.

No, you aren't alone. I feel it is very rude. When I use my speaker phone, I answer, "Hey you're on the speaker... what's up?" Usually people get the hint and don't say anything too personal or crazy.

I agree!!! Some people do that because they are lazy and don't want to hold the phone, or they want EVERYONE in the room to hear what you have to say in order to embarrass you, or try to argue with you.... that has happened to me and i got soooooo mad! i refused to speak to that person again, either online, on the phone or in public. they finally got the hint.
