There is a pretty good variety of good beds on the market. I would suggest that you actually go to a matress store and try lying down on a variety of beds to find the one that feels best. Also, if the best matresses are too expensive, you could probably get a memory foam cover for your futon.

Are you doing anything else that might be straining your back (leaning over a desk or computer, manual labor, etc.)? It may also be that you need to do some back stretches. You might want to try yoga, pilates, tao yin, or something else that strengthens your core muscles and unknots the muscles of the back.
Good luck.

Oh wow ... I've been wondering the same thing! Except, I'm thinking to buy a mattress, and was considering a futon. Now I won't bother!

From what I hear, go with a spring mattress that's fairly firm and that will support your body well. Go too firm and it'll be uncomfortable, but if you go with really soft, you can also get a sore back too.

You can still get a foam mattress if it's got good padding ... a soft top is ok, if the underlying mattress is still fairly firm. But yes, your futon mattress is probably TOO firm, which results in a sore back as well.

I recommend going to the local mattress store, and try some of them out! Whichever is comfortable and supports your back well, is a good bet. It might be pricey though, don't just go with cheapest.

A friend of mine used to wake up at night and in the morning with severe back pain.
He got a sleep number bed, and for the last three months since he got it, hasn't had a sore back or woke up in the night.
He swears by it and recommends it to anyone who has back pain.
