I've started college and a number of the girls have the 'boyfriend back home.' Since they are going to be in college for a number of years and the boyfriends are hundreds or sometimes thousands of miles away, is it right to try to date them? Is it assumed that girls will go out with other guys when they start college?

That is your own personal choice. Do what you feel is right in your heart. If she will still date you having a bf, consider what kind of gf she would make. Remember it is your choice.

Give it some more time and meet some more people. Don't be "That" guy who splits up a relationship. I have good reason to believe that there are more than 2 girls at your school, so try meeting the other ones who don't have boyfriends and see what they have to offer.

Thats Wrong. Imagine if one of those girls was YOUR girlfriend and some other guy was trying to score with them while You are 100 miles away.

No.

If she dumps her boyfriend to date you, what makes you think she won't do the same to you when another guy comes along?

Stick to the single girls.
