I'm not sure about Romero style (Dawn of the Dead, right?), but the best examples I have are people falling into a "zombie-like trance" due to sleeping sickness (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4683903.stm ) before passing into a coma, and what I think you're REALLY looking for, a new strain of Malaria that hit Cambodia (http://65.127.124.62/south_asia/4483241.stm.htm ) and actually caused people who have died to restart their heart, and the victims became extremely violent. They called it outbreak of "zombism" :D

Yea...in books. Besides that...No. Its impossible to bring the dead back, its againest the law of God, and the making of the human body, if you wanna see zombies I hope you can live for a couple hundred years when Jesus returns to earth and the Dead and condemmed walk the Earth. But diaseases tht cause people to become undead? Dream on its science fiction!

Puffer fish can slow vitals and metabolism so people appear dead.
Theres lots of cases of people doing this to fool other into beliving someone is dead and then they go and dig up the bodies and use them as slaves as they become very suggestable.
This is in really remote places where voodoo is still practised...
