Carefully. Some have the combination lock built into them; if so, you'll need to remember your combination. Put this combination somewhere where you can find it -- not on the inside of your locker door or on something else, like a notebook, that will probably be inside the locker when you're trying to open it. (Yes, I had some strange friends in school!) This kind of combination is often written something like 32L 13R 25L, which means you turn the dial to the left or to the right to the appropriate numbers, passing the center 0 mark as you go. Don't leave the dial standing on the last number of your combination when you're done.

If it's the kind of locker without a built-in lock, bring a combination lock or a padlock from home and be sure to have the combination or the key with you. That kind, once the lock is successfully removed, has a latch that slides up or down to open.

There are probably other kinds I haven't yet seen, so just keep your wits about you and you'll do fine. If you have trouble with your locker or with anything else at your new school, don't feel stupid. No one's born knowing all that stuff. Everyone has had to learn at some point. If you have questions about it, please ask someone!!! Find another student who looks like a nice or friendly person (be careful, though, as looks can often be deceiving) or ask an adult. Custodians and security guards and hall monitors sometimes have more time than teachers to answer this type of question.
