You probably won't like my answer. But here goes. If the dog is alraedy used to jumping on the couch, what I have done in the past to my own dogs is to physically SHOVE THEM OFF THE COUCH -HARD!!! I know if sounds really mean, but your dog doesn't like to get hurt and wants to please you. While you are doing this - tell the dog OFF!!!! Keep repeating this. Eventually your dog will learn that they are NOT to get on the couch.
There is something that you can buy that will give them a shock if they get on the couch. You could use that while you are not there. Hopefully this is of some help.

You need to watch the dog whisper on television. I saw an episode like you are describing and you have to let the dog know you are the leader of the pack. This is done with repetitive and constant authority from you. It is hard to explain on the internet just try and find his program and you problem will be resolved. You are letting your dog control you. Remember he is a dog and you are the human, not the other way around.

Wool or fleece blankets might work, or just simply keep your dog off the couch. I it needs somewhere to sit put a dog bed next to the couch.

your dog does that because you haven't trained her not to. supply her with a hard chair to sit on at the window, and every time she gets on the couch tell her off and pull her to the floor. reward her for sitting on the chair. Dogs do not belong up on the furniture where people sit.

very interesting. No college/university I know of allows pets. I suggest you leave the dog at home.

I have a number of inexpensive cotton quilts that I put on my furniture. They are easy to wash, pick up a lot of hair etc. and protect the furniture.
