Sounds silly that someone dunking your head in water would grant you enternal bliss? Come on, seriously, this is what is standing in between a soldier and heaven? God doesn't care if you touched a kid, so long as you let someone dunk you? This kind of sums up what many people don't get about Christianity, why are these goofy cerimonies more important than leading a good life? Leading a life of compassion and kindness, without baptism will get you tossed in with Hitler and Sadam Hussein, but Hitler could have beat the rap if he converted and confessed???

Or maybe it's a natural human tendency to have an overpowering fear of death (just as with every living being), and a community that offers you love, acceptance, and a paradise after life is too hard to resist in that situation, cause the reality of it is so overwhelming.

they are going into battle. they are preparing for their death. as does any soldier who goes to war. every single soldier, combat or not, who goes into a war-zone has the expectation of dying. it's not pessimistic, it's realistic. think about it...
