I was cooking out and a guest told me that he had been asked the question on a military exam. My response was disbelief. He said that all military outpost flagpole trucks contain three things: a razor, a bullet, and a pack of matches. He added that upon being over-run, the last guard was to shred the flag with the blade, burn the confetti, and shoot him/herself in the head. Where did he really get this urban legend BS?...Final Fantasy, Final Destination. Help!

That is not what I was told was in the flagpole truck, although the most common version of truck contents I've heard is below yet it doesn't agree with what I was told either. There are lots of versions of what you will find in the truck - here is one: There are three things inside the truck, and they are a razor blade, a match and a bullet. The bullet is to defend the flag with, the razor is to cut the flag, and the match is to burn it. This is all largely ceremonial. Suicide is not part of what they teach in any U.S. military branch - suicide is for losers like the French & radical Islamics.

I have never heard of such a thing. It doesn't sound like anything the U.S. military would have in it's regs. It IS true however that you don't allow your colors to be captured. I'd burn it and use all the weapons to fight until killed by enemy fire...suicide ain't cutting it.

Its not an urban legend. Not every post/base does it but I have seen it done before. Not that on a CONUS base they would really expect you to use any of it. Its more of just a military tradition.
