A true Christian is a person who realizes their sin, and their need for a Savior; who trusts in Jesus Christ to save them and bring them into eternal life; who loves God and desires to please Him.

This is a multifaceted question. Every denomination has an answer that would describe themselves.
I believe a Christian is one who studies and lives by the teachings of Jesus; including opposing the prevaling religious authorities as Jesus had done; including rendering blessings (not curses) upon all manner of sinners and outcasts as Jesus had done; including the enjoyment of what ever life they now live without causing the suffering of others living very different lives, as Jesus had done.

I am a Christian. "I don't Think I know". A Christian is one who accepts the Anointing of Jesus and Makes Christ ( Anointed) Lord of my life. I believe God the Father , and Jesus the Anointed Son of God are two but Jesus had the Spirit of God with out Measure. and Inherited His Fathers Kingdom.

Uh, Suchfun, Catholics get divorced too - they have this quaint little thing called an annullment. Divorce is not the unforgiveable sin. David & Bathseeba? that wasnt his wife. The woman at the well? she had 5 husbands. Forgiveness is offered to all to ask, regardless of the sin. Harods situation referred to bigotry/polygomy - not divorce.
And catholics being closer to the REAL Christianity??? They gamble in their church (monte carlo nite), worship mortals (saints and mary), and expect works to get them to heaven (penance, rosary, etc.) and a priest cannot forgive you of sins no more than I can - he a man!

The word Christian means "follower of Christ," and is derived from Greek. I'm a Christian, and I believe in the following:
1. I believe in a single God of one substance, that exists in our space-time dimension in 3 personalities: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
2. I believe in the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, present and participating in the creation of the universe.
3. I believe that Jesus Christ, God the Son, came to earth, was born of a virgin and begotten of God, lived and worked among us, His own creation, and was crucified on a cross as a blood atonement for the sins of the world, in the past, present and future, and to restore man to relationship with God, a relationship broken by the rebellion of Adam and Eve. I also believe that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, and is currently with God the Father in His dwelling place.
4. I believe that salvation is achieved by believing in the resurrection of Jesus as atonement for my sin and rebellion, in trusting in this sacrifice to restore me to relationship with God, and surrendering my will and life to the care of God in all things.
Not comprehensive, but it's a place for you to start.

The early Christians are Catholic...and remain so. Protestantism has fallen away from the teachings of Christ such as the teachings about divorce (I think it was Herod who wanted to take another wife and Christ told him he could not and could have only one wife.)
