Deployments are divided into at sea and ashore time. A typical six month deployment in peacetime, would spend about half time tied up somewhere and about half time at sea. War time deployment, as you might guess, spends much more time at sea than in port.

Often, when the carrier tied up somewhere, the air group attached to the carrier would fly off before the ship tied up; so the air group could fly training flights out of land based airports nearby. For example, we often flew out of Cubi Point when the Yorktown was tied up along pierside.

Deployment is 180 days (about) in the US Navy. However there are bases all over the world we visit
