I have obsessive compulsive disorder and a problem known as "hoarding". Although I have been throwing away items and having yard sales to get rid of items I don't need; I have managed not to take in anymore but just keep slowing but surely throwing things away. I live in a big house that still needs remodeling and updating. I have been working on the house for ten years. Unless I get rid of the junk, " which is so hard to part with"; it seems impossible to get the work finished while living here in it. If money wasn't an issue I would move out. Any suggestions on how to part with the junk I don't need and keep my sanity!

Develope a "six moths rule". If you do not use it within a six month period..then toss it.

This is a behavior associated with anxiety. If your counselor does not recognize this, then maybe you should get a new one, or try to be more receptive to the one you see now. You need to ask yourself what your anxiety stems from. What are you afraid of happening or not happening?
All behaviors are coping mechanisms. We all do the best we can with what we know how. Sometimes, we resort to a self destructive, or outwardly destructive behavior to soothe ourselves. We may not even realize what (or why) we are doing or what the long-term effects are.
I saw an episode on Dr.Phil about hoarders, and family interventions. You can look up the online transcript at www.drphil.com . You can also join the message boards and discuss with others that have lived with similar issues.
Congratulations to you for wanting to get your life back, and get control over your affliction. Do you realize that 90% of the obstacles we face, are the ones we put in our own path? And did you also realize that each obstacle is a challenge, and an opportunity to 1-overcome something, 2-improve something, and 3-learn something? You fill in the blanks. Mistakes are just ways to find out what does not work, so never beat yourself up over them. They do not detract from your quality as a human being. They actually give you wisdom, so long as you learn something from them.
Good luck with this. I know you will get a handle on it!

It sounds like you have been doing a good job. Unfortunately there is no overnight solution. Just keep getting rid of stuff you don't need.

Sounds like you're getting it under control. I would call any stores that sell used items and ask them to give you a price for everything.
