'Tiels usually take a few days (sometimes longer) to get used to something new. With my birds, I lay the toys on the bench next to the cage for a couple of days, then hook to the outside, then lay on top, then eventually move them into the cage. Some birds will take longer than others. How old is your 'Tiel? I have ages ranging from 1 year to ten years and everyone likes to be handled. If it is a new bird (new to you), it may take a while. We just let ours crawl all over us (we also spread treats on the kitchen table and laid our heads on our forearms and let them play-WARNING- no sudden movements while doing this!!)until they were comfortable with us and we handled them a LOT (3-4 hours a day is 20-30 minute sessions). Another idea is to teach the bird to "step-up" and then to let him or her "ride" on your shoulder. Granted, it is a position of domination, but, for the shy bird that sometimes will help. GOOD LUCK!!!

My tiel is about 6 months old. She will not play much at all with her toys and I have given her many of them. The only toy she likes is the one that blonged to the Sun Conure. It is a long string with beads from one end to the other with a bell in the middle. I tie it from one corner to the other of her cage. The conure loves it too but he is happy with the tube from inside a roll of tolet paper. Anything makes him happy. She will play with the string of beads and try her best to chew them up. Plus I have both birds out of the cage most all the time. I never shut the lid or doors unless it is bed time and both have play tops on the cage.

Take the little guy/gal out of the cage as much as you can they love to be on you. As the person above me said I too let both birds climb all over me. They play on the back of my chair when I'm on the computer and even play on my desk and still my ink pens. I put dots in the middle of postit notes and let them try to dig it off. My girl friend fights with the conure. It will get off her and walk across the counter top and hook it's beak on the rim of a glass full of a drink and pull it's feet up and will flip the glass. (his fave thing to do). she will start yelling at him and he will yell back then you hear the bird yell louder because she is swatting at him and then you will her telling the bird no bite and the fight is on... Really fun to watch.

So my advise is you just need to make friends with your bird and play with it a lot.

Cockatiels do not really like to be handled as adults, only as babies. My bird chewed on his swing until we had to take it out of his cage and when we put him on it he was terrified. The chewy thingy is a beak sharpener most likely so he will use it when his beak gets dull.
