There is really no need for a 12 year old to have a cell phone. If they do it should be one of those restricted ones that can only call certain numbers like home and mom and dads work numbers.

Only for emergencies. If you feel they are mature enough, than yes, it should be okay. I'm 16 and I still don't have a cell phone (not because of maturity issues though). A lot of the people I know got a cell phone when they were 13 or 14.

My daughter is 10 and she has her own cell phone. I just feel better with her having one. This way if she is at school and something happens she can call me. From past experiences the school has not let her call when something went wrong, I would have wanted to know what happened immediatly. As it was i found out about the incident at the end of the day and was not happy, the school heard about to! Also last year at the school their was a bomb threat, school was let out early, and there was no way of knowing, other than word of mouth in a small town. By the time I found out school was almost over anyway!

It depends on the needs. My son is 11 and my daughter is 10.. they both have a cell phone that they take to school and have with them for after school curriculums. Given they aren't using their phone as often as they are worth.. they are both given 500 minutes a month to talk to friends.
I think it's completely acceptable if the child demonstrates responsibility or need. But remember need and want are two separate things.
If your child wants one.. then find ways they can earn that right.. turning their want into a responsibility. There's nothing wrong with young children having cell phones. They are practical and smart for state of emergency.

I think 12 is a bit young to have a cell, but if you are out a lot then yes having a cell would be a good thing.

Yes. But with certain and definite limitations. I mean, you'd want your child to be safe and be able to contact you in they're in trouble, right? Or if it's YOU that wants a phone, tell your parents that.
But maybe not a real cell phone with a monthly bill. Try a Tracfone. You by minutes on cards and activate them online, and have to renew them every so often. If it's your child who wants a phone, you could tell them that they have a certain amount of minutes for however long it is until you have to renew it, and if they use them up before renewal time, they won't get anymore until the renewal.

No, In my opinion I would think that 12 years have alot more to worry about now a days. Having a cell phone can only lead to unwanted situations.12 year old need to enjoy and grow up slowly !

My son is 11 and I purchased a phone for him under my plan. He has had his since he was 9. I think it is fine as long as the child understands how to use the phone. Mine was purchased for my son to call me when he was at a friends house (they didnt have a phone in the house) Also for emergencies. It really depends on the child and why he/she wants the phone.. Most kids think it is just so cool to have a cell phone.

Absolutely not.. there should be no need for a child to have a cell phone since the parents should always know where they are and so on. In addition, cell phones are carcinogenic.. and you don't want your child to get used to cell phones at an early age, later they will become dependent on them like everyone else nowadays.
