The concept of going to heaven upon death is a purely human construct with no basis in scripture. When you're dead, you're dead. The Kingdom of Heaven will only be open upon the Second Coming. The Lake of Fire that is oft confused with Hell is actually a means of purging the sins of those that have committed sin and not repented so that they may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. If you believe in that.

bullcats1,
Oh Boy!
I am not under the persuation, that you can point to a sin, and say that it's the same for everyone. Whatever blaspheming the Holy Spirit is, I believe that's the closest you can get.

You reach heaven by having faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. If you can set aside all the "works" based 'religious' stuff, you have to have your focus on Jesus.

"Mortal Sin" and "confessing" them are focuses for those who want a fix. The "fix" has already been paid for by the blood of Jesus. Let the sin be a lesson to you, get back on your feet and love God through Jesus Christ. Unless of course you want to be "religious" and go through all of the rituals. :\

Yes because there is no where else to go.

The first thing that someone should be considering is whether the idea of sin is actually real.

If God is supposed to be perfect how could She have made anything or anyone that wasn't.
Think about it. The idea of sin assumes certain things about God that seem highly unlikely.
All this talk about sin sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me.

First it assumes a God who is too incompetent to organize a simple educational field excursion and figure out a way to get all of the students home safely.

How likely is this that God would not be smart enough to come up with a plan for our salvation that is going to work?

It also assumes that God must have created us imperfect if we are sinners.

One might assume that God would be able to create someone perfect each and every time if he chose to. Assuming God is capable of this, then it follows logically that we must be perfect creations if we are actually creations of this perfect God.

Unless of course you are saying that God chose to create us imperfect.

If God created us imperfect then anything that may go wrong is Gods fault, not ours. This seems a bit illogical at best so I think that we need to assume that What God creates would have to be perfect.

If this is the case and Gods creations are perfect, then nothing that we can do could change what God created perfect and make it imperfect unless we think that we are more powerful than God is.

How likely is it that we the creation could be more powerful than the creator. I personally find this idea somewhat amusing, and a bit absurd.

Religion tells us that God is perfect. If this is true then it could hardly be logically for Gods creations to be considered to be anything less than perfect.

If this is the case then Nothing that we can ever do could possibly change this perfection that God willed, unless we were so powerful that our choices could override and change the will of God.

How likely is that????

Think about it.

The idea of sin is simple nonsense; a lie made up about God by religion.

I dont think of life after death as heaven and hell. It's kinda like pergatory. (sp?) In this state, you realize what your plan was for that life, where you strayed and what you still need to accomplish. Ie: what you didnt realize was wrong whether it be a sin or a wrong turn on your path or even something you had planned to experience and didnt get to or avoided it.

After all that business is taken care of, you have the option of enjoying death and non physical body form while planning your next life, or just sitting and learning non human lessons over there.

Different religions / people will have different opinions on this. Personally, I think if you've led a good life, then heaven will be open for you, even if you have unrepented sins.

catholics came up with the "degree" level of sin. ie: mortal/venial. sin is sin and we are all sinners. BUT, the good news is...John 3:16 says it all.
I know by your question, you're been raised catholic, as was I. And I didn't learn A THING till I found a church that taught the bible. Read the book of John, and find a church that teaches strictly from the bible!
And the answer to your question, is yes.
Read the book of John.

No one knows for sure what happens to a person when he dies. Repentance does clear up ones heart. One feels much lighter after acceptance of a sin and repentance. If an unrepentant person dies he just stays dead and does not go any where.

If they are saved yes. Because you are saved by grace, not by degree. Jesus died for sin itself not sin(s) individual if that were the case we would all be in trouble. When he looks down he sees either sinners or saved sinners. You can not fix the flesh only the soul can be saved. Its also not a license to sin we should all do the best we can, but only man has put conditions on salvation, not God.

Yes....
God is merciful, and compassionate, and know each heart individually, and would give you every chance, God know we all have the ability to change.
When we go to Heaven some don't get to see God right off, some have to learn many things before they get this privilege. So my answer is yes, a big God like that has more mercy and compassion than what we have.
