well i'm afraid there were just too many wonderful cakes to choose a favorite - most homemade a couple from the bakery.
of the homemade - there was the red devils food cake, german chocolate cake -so tastey!, grandma's fabulous lemon cake - made with plenty of natural lemon juice and lemon curd filling and dusted with powdered sugar (it was sweet and slightly tart - just mouth watering), then there was the lovely flying elephant cake decorated with dyed shaved coconut (it looked like a cross between dumbo and a "pink" elephant) and then there were the most delicious bakery cakes - there was the tried and true whip cream cake with rasberry and pineapple filling (sensational!) and the cake my husband got me last year for my fortysixth birthday - it was a chocolate rum cake with rasberry/chocolate hazelnut filling between each layer - and it was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and pretty ribbons - almost too pretty to eat... it was out of this world!

If you are ever in San Diego, you may want to stop by and indulge in a gormet dessert a delicious espresso drink or perhaps some english tea and fresh shortbreads or scones - try Extraordinary Desserts - there are two locations one small and one large - but both busy and terrific. The owner's experience includes Le Cordon Bleu, Paris, and more.

Used to have a family member who was a baker and confectioner as a child always had lovely birthday cakes, that used to be the envy of my friends.

I used to love using my imagination and making cakes for my children when they were youn.

Having celebrated a big 0 birthday recently was treated to a Thorntons luxury choc cake - wonderful, it couldn't hold ALL the candles but no problem as being short of breath I would never have been able to blow them ALL out.

Not actually my own birthday cake, but someone I know once ended up with a polystyrene birthday cake by accident. She was on holiday with her family in Spain - her Dad went shopping for the cake - he didn't speak Spanish - he pointed to the one in the window - there was some confusion...

A chocolate and cream sponge cake with smarties on the top made by my three daughters when they were only little girls. It was all lopsided and the kitchen was a terrible mess. They had more cake mix on themselves than in the cake I think, but they made it by themselves as a surprise and I loved it.

I don't mean to sound like a drag here but I've never had a cake made for me. However, thats ok, I can make me my own cake for one of my Birthdays!

It was this one.
Did you ever stare at the flickering candles on your birthday cake, while your friends and family sing that song and then their voices sort of faded and were drowned out by ominous-sounding organ music that kept playing louder and faster...Then dozens of tiny, twisted,weasel-like creatures with glowing red eyes burst out of the cake...throwing frosting and still-burning candles all over the room while you looked on, paralyzed with horror as the weasel creatures started attacking the party-goers, ripping at their throats and faces with razor-sharp teeth, turning the once festive scene into one of unrelenting TERROR?!
Oh right! Like I'm the only one that's ever happened to.
Oh well.

My mum makes me an amazing cake every year, the coolest one was a beach with dolphins in the sea, a rockpool with starfish in it, sandcastles and a bucket and spade all made out of icing! It looked amazing!
