Romance languages are those that have their roots in Latin, the language of ancient *Rome* (hence the term, Romance). Such languages are French, Spanish and Italian, just to name a few. There may be more, but I'm not sure.

Romance languages are the group of languages that have their roots in vulgar Latin.
They are: Spanish - Portuguese - French - Italian - Romanian - Romance (spoken in one canton of Switzerland). Some people would include Catalan and similar dialects, but I don't agree with that.
