A chemical dependency is such a strong dependency on a substance that it becomes necessary to have this substance just to function properly. The need of a substance is developed from abusing it. The drug rarely becomes necessary to one's survival, but some drug withdrawal processes can indeed be fatal.

So its never hereditary.

I don't know.

However, it can be passed on through value systems and habit, much as overweight condition is.

You have seen a tubby mommy, tubby hubby, and super tubby baby many times; none of which are genetically prone to overweight but all of whom eat huge amounts of fattening foods and remain sedentary almost all the time.

In the same fashion, the habit of reaching for pills, inhalers, medicines, or mind-altering drugs to deal with situations commonly handled via other, less chemical routes will produce chemical dependency where no genetic tendency is provable.

Many people, for example, are surprised to learn that a headache may indicate a stuffy room or slight dehydration, and that 12 to 16 ounces of water or opening a window could be more effective than taking two pills.

It's been proven that there is a hereditary link, as addiction is a disease and can be passed on to others in your gene pool. It is not the only factor, but cannot be dismissed.

It can be. Chemical dependency so often runs in families. You need to be aware that you are at risk of developing a dependency if it is in your family. Education is power though, so if you are aware of a potential risk, proceed with caution and discuss your concerns with your doctor.
