It depends upon the type of dog, whether you are serious about training the dog, and whether you are up for the challenge of raising the puppy and the baby because they need to learn how to treat each other. And like Clark said check out Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer on tv or training books. This will make your choice easier. This man gives excellent advice about training humans (adults & children) how to manage their pets at home. When he is done the owners have all the confidence in the world. Look him up on National Geographic channel. I wish you well.

Yes, just be careful in your choice. A puppy to grow up with 8 month old will make for long time friends. You'll have fun potty training and house training at same time, lol. Been there done that! Remember though that puppies teeth are real sharp so watch close with baby. You may want to try one of the rescue groups in your area. They have plenty of dogs needing good homes. They are already neutered, or should be, and they are usually real good to place them in the RIGHT home. An adult dog will be calmer around a baby. GOOD LUCK!

No; the baby is too young. Wait until he at least is old enough to understand "no" and to realise he mustn't pull hair/tail/ears, pinch the doggy, crawl over it etc. Any dog will put up with a LOT from a baby but there comes a time they will snap in protest and then doggie goes to the pound and parents wonder what happened. I would wait until the child is at least 4 yrs old. The dog is not a toy and your child needs to be able to understand it's alive and has feelings too.

No. Absolutely the worst time to bring a new puppy into the house is when the baby is beginning to crawl, pull up and pull other things. The puppy will have to be separated from the baby and they will have to be closely supervised to prevent biting. Puppies also need a lot of intensive training to be around small children safely. Wait until the child is 3 at least.

Make sure that the new dog gets along with kiddos before you bring him home!
Some dogs don't do well with children. Some dogs too. Just make sure you pick the right one and your 8 mo old will be oh-so-happy :)

I say no!
I was arrested for snapping a dogs neck this past Thursday!
Wed. night this dog attacked my 5 y/o daughter, It was bad enough that she had to go to the emergency room. the back of her right leg needed stitches in several places. I called the police and they told me I had to contact animal control. So i did, I got an answering machine....
Thursday morning I was going to my car and the dog came up behind me barking.... wrong move! He got his neck broken.
I went inside and called the police. They came and arrested me.
Its kind of weird... I don't feel bad about it at all. I have never hurt any animal before in my life....
The part I find disturbing is Friday morning, animal control showed up at my house to "investigate" a dog attack... (real speedy aren't they)
For all the dog lovers that are reading this, I know that your blood is boiling right now.... It should be! Mine is too! If the dog owner, animal control and the police would have done what they are supposed to do, my little girl wouldn't be all chewed up and my neighbor wouldn't have a dead dog.... Its kind of typical that I am now the bad guy of the whole situation!

Yes if you really want a dog go for it. The dog and child can grow up together......which is good, be like an extra sibling!

it may be the best time to do so. pick up Cesar Millans book "Cesar's Way", it has a chapter dedicated to bringing in a new dog with a child.
