In very low light, your photos will more than likely be grainy. If you have your camera set to 'auto'...the camera will obviously choose a higher ISO according to available lighting etc...and these small compact/prosumer cameras (due to the sensors they use) really cannot cope too well with higher ISO and thats why you get grainy ('noisy') pictures.
Some of these cameras are worse than others and start having problems even at ISO as low as 80 or 100.
You should experiment a little by setting your own ISO...start at 64, then 100, 200 etc.
Other that buying a digital SLR, which can be extremely costly, there are a number of software programs than can help edit and eliminate the 'noise' in photos...it might be your best option.

Grain is usually the result of a high ISO setting. The higher the ISO, the more your image quality deteriorates.

the following is a edge by using part evaluation of both cameras. They both use a similar length CCD so i ought to anticipate the images to be about a similar high quality. The 720SW is more beneficial rugged, that that's designed upward thrust up to being dropped and submerged lower than water - even as the 740 is splash evidence in simple terms. the different important vast difference is that the 740 has a 5x zoom vs. the 720SW's 3x zoom.

Either you are using a high ISO setting or you are shooting in insufficient light or in dark and the picutures will come grainy.

you might have it on auto ISO- which may push the ISO too high. If you keep it at ISO 64 or 100 it should look pretty clean. anything higher than that- you'll start noticing the noise. at ISO400 or above- it gets really nasty.
