We are surely not free from religion in this country. Just look at the influence of religion on politics.

As for free will, different religions / religious scholars handle this differently. Some believe there is no free will. Others believe that God set up the order of the universe, but doesn't control everything that happens. We are empowered to make good and bad decisions.

All that is guaranteed in the constitution is congress shall promote no religion, or prohibit the practice of it. You can practice your beliefs however you like (as long as it is within the law). That doesn't mean others opinions can be silenced. They are free to express their religion how they like and if that means displaying the ten commandments on their lawn (like several people in my town do) or picketing to express their beliefs or standing on the corner preaching then they are free to do so. if you want freedom from religion - where nobody can throw their beliefs where you can see or hear, then you are asking to suppress free speech and that can't (and shouldn't) happen.

As far as free will, anyone has the freedom to decide what they are going to believe. Different religions may feel that free will should be suppressed, but if someone submits to that belief then in a way they have followed that of free will.

And an atheist (or Satanist, Pagan, Muslim or anyone of any religion) can hold office in this country - there are no laws on that. The culture is probably where minority beliefs probably wont get elected as the majority of voters would be Christian but I imagine in some places there are Atheists in office we don't know about.

freedom of religion means you can get into / out of any religion whenever you want, without the fear to be killed or discriminated from the government. in the soviet union, people were free from religion, you know, church goers were sort of brought to jail -- churches were not allowed to be open, people were enlighted -- there was so much concentration on science back then. in america, people are very concervative, i mean, you can not have a child outside of wed-lock, without being seen as a bad person from society, or this wait till marriage thing.-- it is like adults have lots to say in the life of the youngsters... that is why you are not free from religion..

and what about evolution theory? in alot of states, it is vorbidden to be taught at schools, instead you have to read how adam and eve were the first humans and else, -- from an atheist point of view, this is all a beautiful good night story, but not reality, i mean, people are taught this at school--- and that is pretty good, because people are free from religious dogma and lies that comes out of mouths of religious men-- just watch the movie of michael moore, i loved to watch the movie alot- seems very left to me, which is quite good
the negative part of being free from religion is the falling apart of society, since people who are enlighted seem to have less children, thanks to birth control taught in schools since the age of 13 and 14,-- families fall apart, the mother or father has kids from different partners, there is no real safty -- just watch these hollywood stars, their lives, how often they change their partners or so, these people seem very free from religion to me..

This is the best way to explain free will.

A husband says to a battered wife: "You have free will. Leave me whenever you want to! You have free will. However, if you leave I'll hunt you down and kill you. But it is your choice."

Humans are the battered wife, and God will chuck you to hell if you use your supposed "free will" and piss him off.

Luckily the whole mess is made up.

apparently not, since an natheist cannot hold office legally in the states.Kind of sad that something left over from the 'red scare' of the 50's is still doing damage.
